Students of Iwaki Kaisei High School visited the Fukushima Floating Offshore Wind farm

On August 23rd in 2014, local students of Iwaki Kaisei High School visited the floating offshore wind farm. 2 teachers and 19 students participated in the tour.

Prior to the visit, at “Fukushima Offshore Wind Communication Center” in Iwaki Lala Myu, the tourist center at Onahama, Iwaki City, Professor Ishihara of The University of Tokyo, a technical advisor of the project, gave lecture on the overview and the progress of the project. Students showed much interest in the technology of floating facilities as heavy as a skyscraper in Shinjuku, the technology of generating power safely in the typhoon and high waves and the technology to send energy generated offshore to the land.

After the lecture, the teachers and the students went on board two transport vessels at Onahama Port to visit the offshore wind turbine “Fukushima Mirai” and the offshore substation “Fukushima Kizuna”. Students, who are familiar with the sea, seemed surprised at how big the 100 meter wind turbines and offshore substations.

Their tour was really meaningful because it became a good opportunity for the high school students, who are expected to be in fishery or shipping industry in the future, to understand the demonstration project of the floating offshore wind farm.
