Ambassador Kennedy, who has had a strong interest in renewable energy, visited the Fukushima Floating Offshore Wind Farm Demonstration Project. This project is one of the symbols of the Tohoku region's recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake.
Ambassador Kennedy went on board a special vessel at Hisanohama Fishing Port in Iwaki City to visit the floating power substation and the floating wind turbine, which are 20 km off the coast of Hirono and Naraha Town. She left the vessel to get on board the facility to closely see the system which will not be swayed by the ocean waves.
Ambassador Kennedy said, “I express my respect to those who are making every effort to put the most advanced technology into practice. I hope this demonstration project will be in full use in the future.”
During the visit, she was accompanied by Mr. Murakami, a director of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, and Mr. Asada and Mr. Fukuda, the chairman and a general manager of Marubeni Corporation representing the Fukushima Floating Offshore Wind Farm Consortium. Many reporters from news media including NHK, Jiji Press, Fukushima Mimpo and BBC also went to cover the visit.
